'Bridges of Understanding' is a dynamic program designed to strengthen communication and mutual respect between schools, pupils and their families. By leveraging the power of storytelling and digital media, this initiative promotes a culture of open dialogue, empathy, and collaboration.
This program is typically delivered over 6 or 12 sessions. Content plans will be adapted to different audiences and organisations communication objectives, but follow a similar structure:
Phase 1: Foundation Building
Session 1 - Introduction to 'Bridges of Understanding' & Video Podcasting
Students receive an overview of the program’s goals and structure, considering possible outcomes and benefits from different perspectives. We explore the importance of strong school-family relationships for student success, and look at how podcasting has been used in the past as a tool for community engagement. We look at the communication objectives your school is facing, defining a plan to help overcome specific challenges. This session involves formulating a plan for how bridges will be built between the school, parents and young people.
Session 2 - Identifying Themes & Stories
Brainstorming session with students to identify key themes for the podcast series (e.g., building bridges with the local community, answering parents FAQ's or concerns, how best to communicate and bring to life values the school stands for, academic challenges, celebrating students or extracurricular achievements, school community events etc).
Selecting stories and topics that resonate with both pupils and parents.
Phase 2: Crafting Engaging & Meaningful Content
Session 3 - Preperation & pre-production
Workshop on conducting effective interviews with staff, parents and students.
Technical training on using recording equipment and software.
Session 4 - Training in Interviewing & Recording
Students conduct interviews with selected staff, parents and fellow students.
Collecting success stories, identifying common questions and concerns and a format for how a content plan will be put together. Students will be given training on creating a cohesive podcast episode structure.
Phase 3: Content Creation
Session 5 - Video Podcast Creation
Students will create their first podcast, to introduce the concept to their intended audience. This could involve several people being interviewed, for example students, teachers, leaders at the school or parents. Each group will be asked about what they want to gain from the project and how they feel it will be of benefit in the future.
Session 6 - Editing & Production
Students will be introduced to the principles of editing the first episode they created, integrating music and effects where appropriate.
Phase 4: Community Engagement & Feedback
Session 7 - Podcast Launch
Planning the launch of the podcast series, including a promotional campaign to engage the school community. Students will publish the first episodes on the school’s website and other platforms.
Session 8 - Gathering Feedback
Collecting feedback from listeners (students, parents, staff) to gauge the impact and areas for improvement. Incorporating feedback into the content plan for future episodes to ensure relevance and engagement.
Phase 5: Content Creation Part ll
Session 9 - Episode 2
Students will produce a second episode, this time interviewing a different group, such as teachers, parents or young people, looking for opportunities to build bridges and increase understanding and a more open dialogue between all parties.
Session 10 - Post Production Workshop
Students edit the second episode, integrating music and effects where appropriate.
Phase 6: Expansion & Sustainability
Session 11 - Building a Sustainable Program
Strategies for maintaining and expanding the podcast series (e.g., regular updates, special editions on topical issues). Students will formulate a plan to encourage more students and parents to participate in content creation.
Session 12 - Celebrating Success
Students will organise an event to celebrate the success of the podcast series and its contributors. Sharing testimonials and impact stories from the school community.
